The traditional orangery was once used to house tropical and rare fruits and plants, however a modern day orangery added to a property, is a unique room allowing light to flow in through a roof lantern.
The sides of a modern day orangery are a series of windows, doors and pilasters (or columns). Timber is the only workable material to use to create orangeries, with all other materials looking to plain and flat (lacking the option to add detail.)

Timber Conservatory of flowers
The Timber Conservatory of Flowers is an dilicate Victorian glass house including a central dome roof lantern soaring almost 60 feet in the air, with arch-shaped wings protruding from it; reaching an overall length of 240 feet. It is located atop a gentle slope overlooking Conservatory Valley. The integral structural members are located through one main form, a four-centered or Tudor arch.
The Timber Conservatory of Flowers is made up of a wood structural skeletons with glass inlet walls, set on an elevated masonry foundations and footings. The whole Timber Conservatory has a gentle E-shaped plan, which is oriented along an east-west axis. The main 60-foot high pavilion is entered through a single-story, glazed-in vestibule with a gable roof on the south side of the pavilion. On each side of the rotunda to the east and west are single-story, symmetrical wings framed by wood arches. Each wing is L-shaped in plan, with timber roof lanterns adorning the intersection of the two rooms.
The octagonal roof lantern supports a curved roof that is, in turn, surmounted by a clerestory and domed roof lantern. The clerestory is upheld by eight, free-standing, wood-clad columns, positioned within the rotunda and grouped in pairs. Projecting from the roof lantern on the east, west, and south elevations are dormer windows with a peaked roof lantern. Between large curved structural framing colums, are timber muntins that hold the glass roof lights on their sides. The roof lights are lapped one over one another like shingles and follow the line of the arches.
